The Dart League King
The Dart League King was a facebook recommendation. An old friend was looking for book recommendations and we seemed to have the same taste in books based on her recent reading list. She recommended The Dart League King with conviction enough to have me add to my next book order. It has been sitting in the house since October since other, more pressing books (American Pastoral and Last Night in Twisted River, primarily) took my time. I finally started it last week after finishing Love Warps the Mind a Little. From the beginning, I couldn’t decide if I liked it or not. The characters didn’t do much for me, but at some point the plot came together in a way that I was compelled to continue. Having finished last night, I am certain that I wish I hadn’t read it. There is absolutely no resolution at the end. I didn’t know I needed it until finishing the book. Is there a happy ending or does it end horribly? Let the reader decide. Does not work for me. I’ll choose the most depressing end possible.
The characters in The Dart League King and Love Warps the Mind a Little are not terribly likable. The stories are interesting and the writing good, but I can’t handle any more true-to-life characters. I don’t want morally ambiguous any longer. I don’t want questionable intentions. I don’t want purely selfish motivation. I am not looking for real life. I’m looking for something that convinces me real life can be better than it is.
